How can I tell JIC from ORFS quickly?

JIC has a machined 37° cone with no O-ring. ORFS has a completely flat sealing face with a rubber O-ring in a groove.

Is BSP the same as NPT?

No. They are different thread forms with different angles and pitches — they should never be mixed. BSP uses a 55° thread; NPT uses a 60° thread.

What's the fastest way to measure at site?

A caliper + pitch gauge combo, plus a printed hydraulic fitting chart. This will identify 95% of common fittings on the first try.
